More Than Technology we need Knowledge of Self

Life of Professor Alok Sagar is the Best Example for My Book Brahma Jnan Tantra Jnana

In the early 1990s, a promising young man took a decision in his life that left everyone surprised! Equipped with a graduate and master’s degrees from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and a PhD from the Houston University in the US, the young man was having an equally prestigious job of a lecturer at IIT Delhi. However, all these degrees seemed meaningless to him as he found his true calling somewhere else in one of the remotest parts of Madhya Pradesh, India.

He is Dr. Alok Sagar who, in the year 1982 left his lucrative job at IIT Delhi to serve the tribals and work for their upliftment and empowerment and stay connected to nature. Once a prominent academic, he felt a calling that took him far from the limelight. He realized that his true purpose lay elsewhere.

Alok Sagar was born in a well-to-do educated family in Delhi’s Patparganj, where his father was a senior IRS officer, and mother was a teacher of Physics in Miranda House, Delhi University. His younger brother is a professor at IIT. He, in fact, taught former-RBI governor Raghuram Rajan in IIT Delhi during his stint as a professor there.

For over several decades, Dr. Sagar has lived among the tribal people, sharing their struggles and joys. Despite owning valuable properties in Delhi, he gave up all in favour of tribal welfare. Closely associated with the Shramik Adiwasi Sangathan, he spends most of his time working for their upliftment. He has planted over 50,000 trees, promoting environmental conservation. His efforts have also focused on education and health, bringing about significant changes in the lives of the villagers. He learnt the local dialect and adapted with their lifestyle. He is a highly knowledgeable man having command over various languages. Dr. Sagar feels its only tribals that are truly connected with nature and respect it. He rides for about 60 kms to distribute seeds to the neighbouring villages besides doing rural development work.

It was only during the district elections in Betul that the officials got suspicious of him and asked him to leave when Dr. Sagar had to reveal his identity and qualifications to the police. Else, he would have stayed away from the media.

Dr. Sagar’s humble lifestyle is a testament to his commitment. He owns very little and leads a simple life, using his knowledge to solve real-world problems. He has shown that true wealth lies in the service of others.

Dr. Alok Sagar’s story is a powerful reminder that one person can make a profound difference. His life is a lesson in humility, service, and the true meaning of success.
