Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra
Vedic Astrology like any other branch of Vedic knowledge is aimed at enhancing human welfare by ameliorating sufferings. With this grand mission, sage Parasara (one of those grand eighteen sages like Narada, Vashishta, Jaimini etc.) authored this encyclopedia text in the principals of Vedic Astrology designated as Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS in brief). As the name connotes the text comprises of basic principals of Vedic Astrology in a comprehensive way. It essentially deals with the delineation of life from conception to death, the cardinal underlying principals being those celestial conditions at birth that influence to determine the pattern of the whole life of human beings. The author's two decades of practical experience has been the basis to explain specific fundamentals principles to be used synergistically to interpret horoscopes. Special emphasis has been laid to highlight the understanding of Dasa system alongwith harmonic charts and Avasthas of planets. It consists of Sanskrit shlokas alternating with English translation paragraphs. A must-have reference for any practicing Jyotishi.
Phaladeepika
Phaladeepika is a treatise on Hindu astrology written by Mantreswara. The text is written in lyrical Sanskrit verse comprises 865 slokas and 28 chapters. It is one of the more significant works on Hindu astrology, along with Bṛihat Parashara Hora shastra of Parashara, Brihat Jataka of Varahamihira, and Jataka Parijata of Vaidyanatha Dikshita. It deals in a most comprehensive and authoritative manner with almost all astrological aspects of human life. Mantreswara has equated a retrograde planet with an exalted planet in strength and effects even though it be in an inimical or its debilitation sign differing with Saravali which states that benefics are powerful when retrograde and cause Raja yoga (Hindu astrology) but malefic when retrograde do not confer favourable results. Very little is known about its author, Mantreswara, who is believed to have lived in the 13th century CE. He was born Markandeya Bhattathiri in a family of Namboodari Brahmins in Panchgiri village of Tirunelveli in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He was a devotee of Sukuntlambika Devi and was well-versed in many branches of knowledge; he had traveled to far-off places in India in search of knowledge. He had renounced the world and had finally died in Tirunelveli; his date of birth and his date of death are not known. According to one belief Mantreswara was born in Shalivati in Tamil Nadu and according to another, he was born in Kerala. Whether he lived in the 13th century or in the 16th century remains undecided. His work, Phaladeepika, though very popular in South India and from a very long time in the past available in Southern languages script-versions came to light when its original Sanskrit version was published from Kolkata around 1925. HINDU PREDICTIVE ASTROLOGY.THE PRSENT BOOK IS SO INSTRUCTIVE THAT BEGINNERS AS WELL AS ADVANCE STUDENTS OF ASTROLOGY CAN OBTAIN VERY USEFUL GUIDANCE FROM ITS STUDY.
Saravali
Kalyana Varma, the famous author Saravali belonged to the 10th century AD. He was the king of a place called Vyaghrapada, believed to be somewhere in Madhya Pradesh. From the verses in this work it vs obvious that he has studied the works of Parashara, Varahamihira and Yavana etc before him, and as he felt that they were too brief, he decided to elaborate the principles. Saravali indeed is a monumental work and the study of it is a must for the serious students of astrology. Some topics covered: Description of the 12 Rasis, limbs of Kala purusha and their use, synonyms of Rasis and Houses, zodiacal halves, their Lords and effects. Varaha Mihira's Birhat Jatak from time immemorial has been considered as the standard textbook on Astrology. The commentaries by Bhattotpala have made Brihat Jataka immortal and a standard work. The English translation of Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka is a monumental work in completing which the difficulties in translating a beautiful, technical and suggestive work in Sanskrit had to surmounted by hard labour, profound research and want of adequate expressions. It is not mere a translation work; the ripe experience of Mr. Rao for over 60 years in the field of Astrology and his sound judgment on doubtful points have substantiated its value further.
A collection of three books, this work provides a basic introduction to astrology, details the subjects to be considered before making predictions under each of the twelve houses in the birth chart and demonstrates the effect of each planet, including its relationship with other planets in the houses, on human life. Replete with examples, personal observations and myriad experiences, this book provides the technical aspects of predictive astrology in simple language for the average reader, while being of immense value for astrology students and experts.
