Mantra Meditation: The Power of the Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra
Introduction: Chanting in Kali Yuga
In Kali Yuga, the present age, there are thousands of faults. This is the age of quarrel and hypocrisy. People say one thing and do another. Misunderstandings and disputes occur everywhere — in families, between brothers and sisters, between husband and wife, parents and children — even among spiritual organizations and temples, between different sampradayas, communities, castes, religions, and nations.
Just like the rainy season brings rain, and winter brings cold, Kali Yuga brings conflict, ignorance, laziness, misfortune, and misguided actions. But there is one saving grace in this iron age:
Chanting the holy names of Lord Krishna.
The Hare Krishna Maha-Mantra
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
This is a very powerful sound vibration. In Kali Yuga, Krishna appears in His name — Nāma-Rūpa Avatāra.
Srimad Bhagavatam is the literary incarnation of Lord Krishna. The Hare Krishna Maha-mantra is the sound incarnation — Śabda Brahman.
By chanting this holy name, we can overcome all types of miseries and disturbances. Though Kali Purusha is hard to defeat, we can easily transcend his influence by chanting the Lord’s names. Just as Māyā (illusion) is hard to overcome — "mama māyā duratyayā" — chanting is the simplest means of purification.
Individual and Group Chanting
-
Personal chanting: Called Japa, done on beads, helps in individual purification.
-
Congregational chanting: Called Kīrtana or Sankirtana, done in groups, invokes great spiritual power.
On behalf of ISKCON Tiruvallur, we perform Harināma Sankirtana and Japa Yajna, encouraging everyone to chant the Maha-mantra regularly.
The Founder-Acharya: Srila Prabhupada
ISKCON — the International Society for Krishna Consciousness — was founded in 1966 in New York by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, a disciple of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, following the Madhva-Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradāya, which teaches Achintya Bhedābheda Tattva — simultaneous oneness and difference between the soul and God.
Srila Prabhupada established:
-
108 Radha-Krishna temples worldwide
-
First Radha-Krishna temples outside India
-
Book publishing institutions like the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust
-
Gurukulas, Govinda's restaurants, and Back to Godhead magazine
He published over 80 books, including:
-
Bhagavad Gita As It Is
-
Srimad Bhagavatam
-
Caitanya Caritamrita
-
The Nectar of Devotion
-
The Nectar of Instruction
These are translated into major world languages, spreading Vaishnava teachings globally.
Radha-Krishna Worship vs. Lakshmi-Narayana Worship
Traditionally, Lakshmi-Narayana worship is royal and majestic, but Radha-Krishna worship is simple and sweet — fruits, flowers, Tulasi leaves, water, singing, and dancing, as practiced in Vrindavana, the Lord’s village home.
Srila Prabhupada brought this simple forest worship to cities across the world, spiritualizing millions of lives.
What Is a Mantra?
"Man" means mind, and "tra" means deliverer.
So, mantra means "that which delivers the mind."
If the mind is controlled, it becomes our friend.
If it is uncontrolled, it becomes our greatest enemy.
To control the mind, we must:
-
Chant regularly
-
Live clean, both internally and externally
-
Apply tilak (men) or sindoor (women) — a symbol of auspiciousness and protection
Those without these symbols on their foreheads are vulnerable to negative energies, mesmerism, and even tantric attacks.
Protection from Evil Spirits
Chanting is also a protection from unseen entities:
-
Yakshas, Rakshasas, Bhutas, Pretas, Pisachas, etc.
These entities are hungry, looking for energy and food, just as we look for our meals.
By staying clean, pure, and spiritually strong, we avoid becoming their victims.
Especially:
-
Children should be protected with black mascara (kajal)
-
Women should wear sindoor
-
Men should wear tilak
-
Homes should have Tulasi, Ghee lamps, and holy names resonating
Suffering and the Cause
We all suffer in three ways:
-
Through the body and mind
-
Through other living beings
-
Through natural calamities (e.g., cyclones, earthquakes)
Reasons include:
-
Betrayal in relationships
-
Financial losses
-
Health issues
-
Mental disturbances due to sinful reactions
Especially grievous offenses:
-
Killing cows (our mothers)
-
Killing bulls (our fathers)
-
Killing babies or parents
-
Offenses against women, children, and saints
These bring lifelong and birth-to-birth consequences.
Even Lord Brahma, after stealing Lord Krishna’s friends and calves, had to take birth in a mleccha family to atone for his offense.
Conclusion: Chant and Be Delivered
“In this age of Kali, there is no other way,
No other way, no other way,
But to chant the holy name, chant the holy name, chant the holy name of the Lord.” — Bṛhan-nāradīya Purāṇa
The Hare Krishna Maha-mantra is not a sectarian chant — it is a universal prayer.
It is 1000 times more powerful than any other sound, and it delivers:
-
Peace of mind
-
Protection from evil
-
Victory over suffering
-
Awakening of love for God
Let us all chant the holy names together and uplift ourselves and the world.
